Notes
The analysis starts with the 1945-46 season although it was not officially recognized for the award of the championship. A 16-team Division A and a 14-team Division B ran with no promotion or relegation. Division A was restricted to clubs from the Cities and larger Burghs although surpringly both Dundee and Dundee United were left in Division B. This left seven clubs from the pre-war league structure out in the cold. They joined Dundee Reserves to form the Eastern League.
For the 1946-47 season the basic structure was retained but the Eaastern League was included as a 10-team Division C with the addition of reserve sides from Dundee United and St. Johnstone. Promotion and relegation between Division A and B and Division B and C was instituted.
Dundee and Airdrie were promoted to Division A for the 1947-48 season at the expense of Hamilton and Kilmarnock. Stirling Albion and Leith Athletic were promoted to Division B as it was expanded to 16 teams. Dundee Reserves had finished second in Division B but were obviously unable to be promoted.
Division C was split for the 1949-50 into North East and South East Divisions as more reserve sides joined. Division C was eventually disbanded for the 1955-56 season as Division A was expanded to 18 clubs and Division B to 19 clubs.
For the 1957-58 season the divisions were renamed as Division 1 and Division 2.
This structure was retained until the 1975-76 season although Third Lanark folded while Clydebank and Meadowbank were admitted to expand Division 2 to 20 clubs and give an even number.
The Premier Division was created for the !975-76 season. Initially there were 10 clubs in the Premier Division and 14 in the First and Second Divisions.
The Premier Division was expanded to 12 clubs in 1986-87 with 12 in the First Division and 14 in the Second. For the 1988-89 season the structure reverted back to 10-14-14.
The 12 team Premier Division returned in 1991-92 with a 12-12-14 structure. This gain lasted only two seasons before a four division steup was created with 10 teams in each division. Two extra teams, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County, came in to balance the numbers.
In 1998-99 the ten Premier Division teams broke away to form the Scottish Premier League. The league structure was reained for two seasons before the SPL expanded to 12 teams. The First, Second and Third Divisions remained with 10 clubs each so two more Highland League teams, Elgin City and Peterhead entered the SFL.
Results for Livingston FC include those of its precessor club Meadowbank Thistle.
